ABOUT US

We are a small, family owned and operated daylily nursery, licensed and state-inspected, in Mount Eden, Kentucky, located next to Taylorsville Lake State Park. My husband Wally and I started growing daylilies about 8 years ago when we bought 30 acres in Mount Eden. Gosh, how time flies.

I do not think either of us anticipated how involved or enthralled we would be with daylilies when we planted that first daylily. I love them, from the oldies to the latest cutting edge cultivar, the tall, lanky spiders, the ones with teeth and the ruffled, bubbly edged ones. I love them all! They are so easy to grow and soooooo forgiving.

That first daylily multiplied into many others and now we grow over 1300 cultivars and thousands of plants. We have spent many hours digging beds, planting daylilies, watching them grow, dividing them, putting in more beds, and watching them grow some more. It has been hard work but a labor of love.

Can't a guy get any sleep?

My husband Wally and I do all the digging, planting, shipping and anything else that needs to be done. You really do get personal service! The rest of our staff consists of 6 cats and Bear, our Golden Retriever /Chow mix who has been with us for almost 13 years and provides deer control. Since he is a bit arthritic, he now serves in what I call his advisory capacity; he barks to let us know a deer is present and leaves the rest to us. He is also my personal body guard; he stays with me in the daylily beds without complaining unless I stay too long past his supper time. The cats, Jay Jay and Tina, mousers par excellence, Starbuck, Boomer, Missy and Barnie, make up the mouse and vole squad ably assisted by Charlie the black rat snake. Charlie has been the cause of major excitement on several occasions when guests spy him sunning himself in the daylily beds. He is quite harmless to humans and generally moves along with a little prodding.

Sadly, we had to say goodbye to our dear Lady who had been with us for 12 years and served on the Welcoming Committee during Dazzling Daylily Days. Even when she was sick, she continued to walk over to the daylily beds every day with us and would keep watch under the oak tree. When guests arrived, she would get herself up and go greet the visitor with a smile, a wag of her tail and a lick in return for a pat on the head. She was a good friend and is sorely missed.

We practice organic farming methods as much as possible. We have never used any chemical pesticides on our plants; we let nature’s bounty such as ladybugs, toads, beneficial nematodes, and praying mantis take care of most of the pesky critters. We do spray routinely with a fungicide to prevent daylily rust in order to keep the garden free of this problem. We also dip plants in fungicide or a Chlorox solution prior to shipment. If you would prefer that we not dip your plants, please let us know.

Our plants are field-grown in heavy Kentucky clay which we amend with compost and organic fertilizers (manures, alfalfa meal, etc.). We have started mulching to help preserve moisture and to keep the weeds under control. We do not generally mulch in the winter, except for the new plantings and a few soft evergreens which we do baby a bit because we like them so much. We have noted this in the catalog.

If you would like to contact us for any reason, please email us at info@possumridgedaylilies.com. We enjoy hearing from you and welcome your feedback, good or bad.
